Excessive sweating/hyperhydrosis

What is excessive sweating?

Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) affects millions of people all over the world. When sweating matures and becomes excessive, it can be distressing and uncomfortable. Unconstrained sweating can develop in different areas of the body. It is excessive sweating of the axilla (under arm area) that can be effectively reduced by carefully placed injections. Despite the fact that stress and high temperatures can raise perspiration levels, they do not cause hyperhidrosis. Excessive sweating can upset many aspects of an individual’s life including work, self-esteem, relationships, and overall well-being.

At Mira Clinic in Perth, our highly experienced nurses treat many clients with differing degrees of hyperhidrosis using wrinkle relaxing medications which target sweating at its source.

What causes excessive sweating?

Overactive sweat glands create hyperhidrosis, this condition may be a physiological condition or an inherited trait that doesn’t allow the body to regulate its temperature properly. The eccrine glands live in different concentrations all through the skin. Eccrine sweat dissolves on the skin’s surface and an exchange of thermal energy occurs, mainly from direct guidance from the blood vessel’s supply to the skin. Even if the glands are normal, there is an unusual neurologic response to stimuli in the sweat areas. The eccrine sweat glands are in greatest concentration in the soles, armpits and palms.

What are wrinkle relaxers?

Wrinkle relaxers are natural, purified proteins that block the release of a chemical from nerve endings that signals perspiration on a temporary basis, helping to minimise excessive sweating.

How does the treatment work?

Wrinkle relaxers are used to help excessive sweating which is caused by excess nerve stimulation of the sweat glands by locating the sweat at its source. Once the wrinkle relaxer medication is injected by one of our practitioners, it binds to a particular protein in the nerve endings at the sweat glands in the injected area that are accountable for excessive sweating. There, it stops the discharge of the chemical that signals the body to generate the extra perspiration.

What does the treatment involve?

At Mira Clinic, during your consultation, our doctor will determine if wrinkle relaxers are a suitable treatment for you.

The treatment is a non-invasive procedure where a tiny amount of solution is injected into the armpits with a fine needle. The consultation, consent and preparation for treatment takes approximately 20 minutes. The treatment itself takes only a few minutes. Any discomfort is brief, and usually, a stinging sensation occurs but for just a few seconds. Patients can return to normal activities right after the session.

Following the procedure, it takes approximately one to two weeks for the treatment to take full effect.

How long do the results last?

When we treat the arm pits in this manner we use the same dose of wrinkle relaxer that was used in a clinical trial (Heckmann et al. 2001). Similar to the results of that clinical trial, after treatment, most of our patients experience about an 80 to 90 percent reduction in sweating from their armpits. The majority of clients still had significantly reduced amounts of armpit sweating 24 weeks (almost 6 months) after treatment. Many patients report reductions in sweating that last much longer than this. The effects vary from patient to patient.

At Mira Clinic we regularly treat patients with excessive underarm sweating and feedback about this treatment using wrinkle relaxers has been overwhelmingly positive. Although wrinkle relaxing injections can be done to reduce the sweating from the soles and the palms, it is not a treatment that we offer at our clinic.
