High cheekbones have always been an indication of youthful beauty, however, as we age, our cheeks start to lose volume. As bone density decreases, hollows and facial folds become more pronounced.
Until recently, surgical cheek enhancement was the only possible way to increase volume in the cheek area.
Cheek enhancement with dermal fillers is a quick solution that enhances definition and adds fullness and height to the cheeks. Dermal fillers are injected at different depths to fill the cheek area and achieve natural fullness and volume immediately. After the injections, cheekbones become more noticeable, the nose to mouth folds soften, and the skin appears tighter.
If you’ve been looking into cheek enhancement, you will know that implants are also an option.
Cheek implants, which are generally made of silicone, are a permanent addition to the structure of your face. During the surgery, small implants will be placed in the cheek area to alter the appearance of your face. This does mean that you will need to factor in recovery time though. Unfortunately, with cheek implants, there is also a higher risk of complications, including implant rejection, which is why fillers are the preferred choice for cheek enhancement.
Dermal fillers might be temporary but the treatment is effective and doesn’t require any downtime.
Whether you decide on implants or fillers is mainly dependent on what you want to achieve. If you would prefer a subtle change without the procedure having to impact your daily schedule, dermal fillers are probably a better choice.
Follow our client Holly Garvey at her recent appointment with our Medical Director Dr Andrew Clark. Dr Andrew has used 2ml of premium dermal filler to create natural, lifted and defined cheek bones without excess facial fullness.
Non-invasive cheek enhancement is achieved using dermal fillers. After careful assessment, dermal filler is injected into the area next to the cheekbone to contour and reshape the cheek, with an emphasis on creating a natural look.
During the consultation, we will decide on the treatment goals, record any abnormalities and plan the best approach to non-surgical cheek enhancement to achieve optimum results.
Treatment is carried out at our cosmetic clinic in Perth and takes approximately 30 minutes. The dermal filler is injected into the cheeks to enhance the profile, shape, and symmetry.
Changes in the projection and shape of the cheeks can be seen right after the treatment. However, results vary from patient to patient. Cheek fillers will provide long-term enhancement. However, repeat treatments are recommended every 12-18 months to keep the desired shape.
Patients who wish to improve the shape and size of their cheeks may be suitable for cheek enhancement treatments. Careful placement of dermal filler along the back of the cheek can help create or enhance the contour from the cheekbone to the mid-cheek. This procedure is popular with clients of all ages and the results are often described as both flattering and rejuvenating.
During your consultation in one of MIRA clinics, our practitioner will discuss all possible side effects with you. Your doctor or nurse will also take you through what you can expect during your procedure and ensure that your expectations about your results are realistic. Most of our clients describe any side effects of dermal fillers as minimal. Mild swelling, bruising and some redness are all possible, but are hardly noticeable. In most instances, our clients are able to return to work and partake in any social engagements the day after their session, if not directly after their treatment.
Your entire appointment will likely take less than an hour. We ask clients to avoid vigorous exercise for 24 to 48 hours after this treatment to prevent the filler from migrating to other areas of the face. Apart from this restriction, most people feel comfortable going back to their normal activities right after treatment.
When we do this procedure, we usually start by injecting a small amount of local anaesthetic to numb the spot where the dermal filler is injected. After this numbing injection has been applied, very little pain will be experienced during your treatment. We understand that every patient has a different pain threshold and we will do everything possible to ensure that you are comfortable throughout your session at the clinic. Patients should also prepare for the fact that there might be some mild soreness or tenderness in the treatment area that may last for several days.
This is another reason why so many patients prefer cheek fillers to implants – you can easily reverse the effects of the treatment. In the event that you aren’t happy with the appearance of your cheeks, a dissolving agent can be used to reverse the effects of the injections. After which, your cheeks will return to their normal appearance. If you opted to get implants though, a second surgery will be required to reverse the effects of the procedure.
How long your fillers last will depend on how quickly your body metabolises the injections. Repeat treatments are the only way to maintain the results of your cheek enhancement sessions. In general, taking care of your skin and staying hydrated will also help your fillers last longer. The good news is that cheek fillers generally tend to last longer because they’re placed in an area that isn’t subjected to as much facial movement.
If you want to add volume to more than just your cheeks, you can speak to your doctor about a custom treatment plan that will include adding filler to other areas in order to create a more youthful appearance. Many patients find that once they add filler to their cheeks, they need to plump up other areas too in order to create a more consistent look.
