The aging process affects every part of the face, but one of the most noticeable changes is a loss of volume from the face resulting in a deflation of the cheek.
This volume loss results in a loss of support of the skin and muscles of the face which can lead to sagging of the cheek, and descent of tissue to the jawline adding to the appearance of the jowls. For many years a popular solution to try to reverse this process was to inject dermal fillers into the cheeks to replace the lost volume.
It’s important to understand that this procedure uses prescription only medicine and should only be performed on patients with features amenable to this type of intervention and they should only be performed by highly trained health practitioners.
It is our belief that the indiscriminate performance of cheek filler injections has led to the large number of people with puffy and unnatural looking faces that we sometimes call “pillow face”.
For this reason its important to consider some of the alternatives before choosing cheek filler. During any consultation at MIRA Clinic we will assess your medical history and your physical features as well as your motivations before recommending any treatments.
When considering methods of restoring volume to the cheeks, dermal filler is not always the best choice, and it is important to consider alternatives such as the EmFace treatment.
The EmFace is able to increase the muscle tone in the zygomaticus muscles of the face, which results in a slight pulling up the corners of the mouth and can reduce the jowls.
Cheek filler treatments usually involve the injection of dermal fillers most of which are “prescription-only” substances and therefore we are not able to advertise any treatments that use these substances.
The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration has said that showing before and after pictures with results created by dermal fillers is also a type of advertising that is prohibited in Australia.
In the past, this webpage used to have before and after pictures of our patients, which we displayed in order to demonstrate our approach and what we considered to be a result that was sufficiently subtle to not look fake but sufficiently improved in order to objectively reduce certain physical signs of aging. We no longer display these case studies in an effort to comply with the new guidance on advertising of treatments that use prescription only medications.
If you would like to see some of the results of our treatments with dermal fillers, we can only show them to you during your consultation. The advantage of this is that we can show you results that are more relevant to your features, and they can help us to explain to you the possible benefits and risks of any procedure that might be considered.
Although there are many common patterns that we see, everyone ages in their own unique way and has different attitudes towards the changes they see in their face. For this reason, it’s not possible to answer this question without seeing a trained professional who takes the time to get to know you, understand your motivations and to properly assess your skin and your facial features.
When we assess our patients during our consultations, we don’t just consider whether one particular type of treatment (such as cheek filler injections) are going to be helpful. We also consider a range of treatment options that might be helpful for our patient’s unique goals. These options may or may not include the use of a prescription medication and it may also be to recommend no treatment at all.
If you are worried that you might come to the clinic for a consultation to find out that we don’t recommend a particular treatment that you have your heart set on receiving, we want to remind you that we only do this because we have your best interests in mind and don’t want you to choose a treatment that has a significant chance of leaving you disappointed. If you live a long way from the clinic and are worried about wasting time coming to the clinic, you can contact us to arrange a telemedicine consultation so that one of our trained practitioners can assess your suitability for certain minor procedures that may be carried out at a later date at one of our locations in West Perth or Joondalup.
The consultation is so important, because by assessing the features, medical history and motivations to seek treatment, we are better able to formulate a treatment plan with a higher chance of leading to a satisfied patient. An important part of minimising unhappy outcomes, is to not recommend treatments when we believe they are unlikely to produce results that will satisfy our patients.
If you are unhappy with the results of any of our treatments, please get in touch with us so we can listen to your concerns and do our best to help.
If you are unhappy with the results you have received from another clinic, please reach out to them, they will be in the best position to help.
Unfortunately, complications do occur, sometimes they can be easily improved with a touch up treatment, sometimes it can be very challenging and there are risks of making things worse. So please choose your practitioners wisely and make sure you get as much information as possible before proceeding with any treatments.
All treatments have the potential for side effects. The risks of different side effects will depend upon the type of procedure and the way in which it is performed. Side effects may be minor and temporary, or they may be significant and long lasting. During your consultation in one of MIRA clinics, our practitioner will discuss all possible side effects with you, and the implications of any pre-existing health issues will be discussed.
