Important Notice
There have been recent updates in the advice from the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) about advertising of medical or nursing treatments that necessarily result in the use of a prescription only medication (such as dermal filler injections – which use substances listed on Schedule 4 of the Therapeutic Goods List).
Therefore the information on this web page has been changed. Previously, we had information describing what to expect when having lip filler injections, and we used to show before and after images of our patients who have had lip filler treatments with us. We felt that doing this was helpful to anyone curious about these treatments or who may have wanted to see examples of our work to help them to choose which practitioner they wanted to see.
The TGA has announced that providing any type of information about these treatments (outside of a private consultation room) is likely to be considered a form of advertising of the substances used in these types of treatments. Therefore it is now prohibited to share this type of information publicly such as on a webpage or a social media page.
If you’d like more information about Lip Filler injections please book in for a consultation (with no obligation to proceed with any treatment).
Please remember, that filler injections are one option out of many that might be appropriate for certain patients looking to alter the appearance of their lips. As a clinic with many different treatment options available, we are able to use our experience to assess each patient and devise a tailored treatment plan in consultation with our patients.
Dermal fillers, including lip fillers, are prescription only substances because they have the potential to cause serious problems. It is only possible to have lip filler injections after a thorough personalised consultation, during which your suitability for the treatment will be assessed and at the end of the consultation you may or may not be offered a prescription for the substances necessary to do these injections. During the consultation we will describe the intended benefits as well as the possible complications and the mitigating steps that are taken to minimise these risks and the contingency plans that we have in place. You should not proceed with any filler treatment unless you understand all of this information which is better discussed in person during your consultation.
The after picture is taken 6 weeks after the treatment, we recommend that this treatment be repeated in approximately 6 months and we expect the results to improve even more with each treatment.
It is important to keep in mind that there are other ways to increase lip volume that do not require injections. The treatment that we have at MIRA Clinic that can do this is a combination Radio Frequency and High Intensity Ultrasound treatment using our BTL Exion device [hyperlink to placeholder page for Exion] device. Which is why when you come in for your consultation we won’t simply give patients whatever treatment they ask for, we will do a detailed consultation and learn more about each patient’s motivations and assess their unique skin characteristics and assess their facial proportions
Previously on this web page, we featured objective, clinical photographs of our own patients before and after their lip filler treatments. We showed how the results look a few weeks or months after the injections so you can see the final result after it had a chance to settle. We did this so that prospective patients could judge for themselves whether or not they liked the aesthetic outcomes we created with our treatments.
However, since the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration updated their advice , the use of before and after pictures that showcase the possible results of a dermal filler treatment is now considered a type of advertising and is prohibited.
If you want to see any of our before and after images from our lip filler injection treatments, you can do so during a bespoke consultation with one of our practitioners.
On our website, in order to be compliant with the TGA advertising rules, we will only be showing before and after pictures of treatments that do not depend upon a prescription-only substance in order to achieve the demonstrated results. For example, the Exion Face applicator, is a no-needle treatment that studies have shown is able to stimulate the body to make its own hyaluronic acid and therefore create subtle, natural-looking lip enhancement. Since the Exion treatment does not use any prescription-only medication we can show you the before and after results from this treatment.
Due to the TGA advertising guidelines we can’t mention the names of any lip filler brands publicly. Whilst its true that each brand of dermal filler has slightly different gel characteristics that result in the fillers looking and behaving differently on the lips, in our opinion, the major factor that determines a lip filler result is the technique used and the skill of the practitioner.
It’s a bit like choosing your accountant based on the brand of calculator they use. It’s much more important that they have experience and knowledge, explain the options properly, and perform their work skillfully and ethically.
Instead of focusing on the brand of filler that might be used, any person thinking of getting lip filler injections should seek out experienced practitioners and take their advice on whether or not lip filler injections are even appropriate for them, and if they are appropriate, then the experience and recommendation of the practitioner should be relied upon to choose the brand of dermal filler.
We recommend scheduling a consultation with us so that we can discuss your needs and take you through your options. At the consultation, one of our experienced practitioners will examine you and make recommendations that will help you decide on the best course of action for you, which may even be to have a treatment without any injections (like the Exion Face treatment), or to have no treatment at all.
All cosmetic injections, including lip filler injections, cannot be performed on anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding. There are also several medical conditions that increase the risks of filler injections, these will be discussed with you during your consultation.
If you need to travel a long distance to see us and are worried that you may not be able to have treatment due to a medical condition, we recommend contacting us to schedule a telehealth consultation.
The TGA rules require that we don’t advertise the cost of any treatments, such as lip filler injections, because these treatments use prescription-only substances. The TGA has indicated that they believe the publishing of the price of these treatments is probably an example of prohibited advertsing, especially if the price is expressed as a “per syringe” or “per mL” price.
The cost of a lip filler treatment will all depend on the type of filler we recommend is used, as well as how much filler needs to be injected to achieve your desired outcome. Every person is unique and will receive a thorough assessment during their consultation. Any treatments recommended will be fully explained including all details about pricing. There is no obligation to proceed and no judgement from us if you decide not to proceed, no matter the reason.
