For some of us, the size of the reddest part of the lips (called the vermillion) is smaller than we’d like. Successfully increasing the size of small lips requires an understanding of proportion so that the final result looks both natural and sensual.
Lip enhancement using dermal fillers has fast become one of the most popular cosmetic treatments around today. By performing thousands of these treatments over the past few years, we have developed the experience necessary to ensure we can communicate with our clients prior to their treatments to help them achieve the best results possible.
Injectable dermal fillers are very popular these days and are mostly used for lip enhancement procedures. There are more and more brands of dermal fillers becoming available for use in Australia. Each brand of dermal filler has slightly different gel characteristics that result in the fillers looking and behaving differently in the lips. Based on our extensive experience, we can describe the differences to you and help you decide which brand of dermal filler to use. We stock and have experience with most dermal filler brands that are available in Australia – many clinics will stock only one.
Once you have undergone a medical consultation (which includes a prescription – if appropriate) and we have finished describing the treatment, and gone through the consent process, the actual lip filler treatment is relatively quick, it usually takes 5 to 10 minutes. We offer all clients the option of either numbing cream or numbing injections to make the session as comfortable as possible. Numbing injections are more effective and very quick. Because we use numbing medicine that is a bit different from what most dentists use, the numbing will wear off much faster. Most of the time our numbing injections will wear off in 15 to 60 minutes. Some people prefer not to have very numb lips (from injections) and choose the numbing cream instead. The cream takes 10 to 20 minutes to work.
Many types of dermal fillers can be injected around the mouth and in the lips. The fillers that we recommend for use in the lips are ones that contain factory manufactured substances very similar to the hyaluronic acid substances that are found naturally in everyone’s skin.
After injecting the gel, the filler shapes and supports the tissues of the lips. There are many different hyaluronic acid fillers available in Perth. We recommend scheduling a consultation with us so that we can discuss your needs and take you through your options.
At the consultation, one of our skilled practitioners will examine you and make recommendations that will help you reach the best possible outcomes.
This is a before and after image showing the results of dermal filler injections by our Medical Director Dr Andrew Clark. Filler was used to soften the vertical lip lines on our lovely client. These lines are often called “smoker’s lines” but you don’t necessarily need to be a smoker to get these lines.
Many clients who want help with their vertical lip lines are worried that if they get dermal fillers in their lips, they might end up looking “fake”, “done”, or “duck-like”. When the correct type of dermal filler is used and is injected by an experienced medical professional, the lips can be smoothed significantly and yet still show no signs of any artificial enhancement.
The after picture is taken 6 weeks after the treatment, we recommend that this treatment be repeated in approximately 6 months and we expect the results to improve even more with each treatment.
To answer this question, you must first ask yourself why you want to modify your lips. You should not undergo this procedure unless you really want to change the appearance of your mouth. You should also never undertake any type of cosmetic procedure to please someone else.
Having realistic expectations about the outcome of your treatment is important. Enhanced lips may make your mouth appear plumper and fuller, but you will still be you when you walk out of our clinic.
If you have ever had a cold sore, you should tell your practitioner before having lip enhancement treatments as you will need to take preventative measures beforehand. Also, make sure to mention any medications, including herbal supplements, over-the-counter and prescription medications at the initial consultation.
You can either choose to wait for your lip fillers to be metabolised after a few months or we can inject a dissolving agent that will return your lips to normal again.
Bruising, swelling and redness are all potential side effects but in almost all cases, they are very mild, which means you are free to return to work directly after your session. Serious side effects only occur if your filler is injected by an unqualified clinician.
This will all depend on the type of filler you decide on as well as how much filler needs to be injected to achieve your desired outcome.
Absolutely! If you only need to enhance the top or bottom lip to achieve a more balanced look, that is entirely possible. Speak to your clinician about your expectations and requirements so that a personalised treatment plan can be developed.
You will see an immediate difference in the size of your lips but this will mostly be swelling. Most of the swelling will subside within a few hours but you should give your lips several days to settle before you decide whether or not you are happy with the size and shape. While no downtime is necessary after a lip filler session, it is highly recommended that you schedule your sessions several days before any big events such as a wedding.
It’s important to stay away from the gym or any strenuous exercise for at least a day after your appointment. When you increase blood flow to the face, it can prolong the swelling or even make it worse.
