Intensive Pulsed Light (IPL) photorejuvenation treatment in Perth

Our Australian climate makes it hard to escape the harsh rays of the sun and the damaging effects sun exposure has on the skin. However, it is possible to help correct the side-effects such as pigmentation, discoloration, age-spots, freckles, and fine lines with Intensive Pulsed Light (IPL) photorejuventation treatments.

What is IPL photorejuvenation?

IPL photorejuvenation is a non-surgical and non-invasive facial treatment used to assist with a variety of skin concerns caused by sun damage, scarring, and general aging. It’s extremely popular world-wide due to the variety and quality of results experienced by recipients.

A small clear light handle is smoothed gently over the surface of the area to be treated, where a broad-spectrum light is transmitted through to the skin. This light is absorbed by melanin or small blood vessels, creating a response in the body which results in the fading of pigment from vessels or spots such as freckles. Following treatment, you will experience ‘flakes’ of this pigment coming off the treated area to reveal smoother skin underneath.

IPL photorejuvenation can be used to treat any area of the body, however it is most commonly used on the face, décolletage, and hands where skin appears the most damaged. IPL works best on light coloured skin due to the contrast necessary to target the affected areas.

Results you can expect from IPL photorejuvenation

IPL photorejuvenation helps to even out skin tone as well stimulate natural collagen production levels. Clients can experience the following after treatment:

  • A more even skin texture and tone
  • Improvement in the appearance of small red blood vessels and capillaries under the skin
  • Improvement of pigmentation and discoloration of skin such as age spots, brown patches and freckles due to sun damage
  • Improvement in rosacea
  • A reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles due to extra collagen production

FAQs

Getting your IPL Photorejuvenation treatments

How should I prepare for the IPL treatment?
  • Staying out of the sun for at least four weeks prior to treatment (and following treatment), using a minimum of 30+ SPF everyday
  • Remove any fake tan and fake ran residue prior to treatment
  • If you are prone to cold sores, ensure to take anti-viral medication as the IPL may awaken this particular virus
How long does the treatment take?

Each treatment takes about 20 minutes to perform, however we ask you allow an hour for pre and post-treatment consults.

What happens during the treatment?

You will be given dark goggles to protect your eyes, and a cool gel will be smoothed over the skin to be treated. Pulses of light will be applied via our machine. It is at this point you may experience a brief stinging sensation or heat with each flash. To help reduce the discomfort we routinely apply a numbing cream prior to treatment.

What can I expect immediately after treatment?

You may feel warmth on your skin and be slightly red, however this generally passes within a couple of hours or can last the rest of the day. This can be calmed with a cold compress and by also avoiding hot showers.

Over the following days you will witness discoloured areas of your skin begin to appear darker and come to the surface. These will dry and fall off during the recovery period.

As with any skin treatment, there are always risks and individuals will react differently. You may experience redness or swelling for a few days following treatment. Those with darker skin tones may experience lighter coloured spots on their skin. These can go away from anywhere between a few days to up to one year. You should discuss any concerns with our Dermal Therapist.

What is the aftercare like?

Following treatment, you must stay out of the sun, use high-protection sun cream, and not exfoliate for at least one week. You skin will also be sensitive to heat, therefore you should take cool showers only. It’s advisable that in the rare case you have a blister, that you do not pick it in order to avoid scarring.

You will be provided with all of your individual aftercare instructions following treatment.

How long does recovery take?

Discoloration will begin to surface and flake off within a few days following treatment. However, please allow a two-week period to see the full results. You may wear make-up and go about your days as usual during this time.

If you are planning to attend an event, ensure to allow 14 days prior to allow for full recovery.

How many treatments do I need?

Most of our clients require at least 4-6 treatments, 4-6 weeks apart. Some individuals may only require one treatment, whilst others may require a more extensive course of eight, our MIRA Clinic team will be able to advise you on the best course of action once we review your skin.

How long do the results last?

We recommend returning for maintenance treatments every 6-12 months. This will allow us to target any new areas of concern and refresh the results we have achieved.

Who is IPL photorejuvenation most suitable for?

IPL is used to treat a number of different skin concerns including wrinkles, large pores, dull skin, fine lines, pigmentation, skin damage, and acne scaring. Due to the wide variety of concerns it targets, it can be used by just about anyone. However, as the photo-rejuvenation machine targets pigment against, it’s best suited to those with lighter skin tones.

Who should avoid IPL photorejuvenation?
  • Those with tanned (real or fake) or sunburnt skin
  • Those with a darker skin colour
  • Those using medication which causes the skin to become sensitive to light, such as Roaccutane
  • Those with skin conditions such as eczema or dermatitis to the area being treated
  • Those with any infection to the skin such as herpes or cold sores
  • Individuals prone to seizures
  • Pregnant women
